Application of Gene Therapy in Treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s Disease

Abstract

Gene therapy is a newer field in therapeutics and there are already visible results in clinical trials that have been conducted. This paper looks into how gene therapy could be a turning point in preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. It dives into the latest breakthroughs, including gene-editing tools like CRISPR-Cas9 and viral vectors. By targeting the genetic roots of these diseases, gene therapy offers the opportunity to prevent, slow, or even reverse their progression. This literature review uses secondary sources in a qualitative approach to analyze existing data from other published and credible articles and papers. Additionally, there is the representation of quantitative data to show a comparison of how much gene therapy is being introduced in clinical treatments. This paper also explores the risks and limitations involved, such as how to safely deliver these therapies, ensure long-term effectiveness, and avoid unintended genetic changes or mutations. Given the growing number of people affected by these neurodegenerative conditions, gene therapy could be a promising path toward better treatments in the future.
